Quilatoa Loop pt. 3 – coming of age

We heard a tune echo across the valley over two days. The same tune played over and over again. It sounded like a live orchestra. At times it was very close, at times far in the distance. We couldn’t make sense of this bizarre and repetitive soundscape in an otherwise bare and remote countryside.

Then it appeared right behind the trees from our farmstay Posada de Tigua. We finally got to ask our host and bring clarity to this mystery. There was a coming of age ceremony taking place. This gang of extended family was having a two-day hoot doing rounds in the area collecting money and blessings for the boy. We finally met them on the road when leaving Tigua.

Food for thought for Frida’s celebrations…
